INTRODUCTION TO CONTINUITY EDITING

INTRODUCTION TO CONTINUITY EDITING:

A match cut is a method directors use in the editing of their film to suggest a relationship between two objects and create a visual metaphor. It is a cut from one shot to another where two shots are graphically matched by the action or subject.

Match on action: an editing technique for continuity in which one shot cuts to another shot portraying the action of the subject in the first shot. An example of this can be found in Bringing up Baby:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKS2d6TyiWo

Graphical match: a cut in a film editing in which an object in the two shots graphically match, often helping to establish a strong continuity of action and linking the two actions together. We can see this in the following video in Horror Hotel, Christopher Lee: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_p_d4TbgWQ

Sound bridge: type of sound editing that occurs when sound carries over a visual transition in a film shown in the example from the movie Moulin Rouge: https://collegefilmandmediastudies.com/film-sound-and-music/

Cross cuts: quick cuts between two different shots and the action happening at the same time. By cutting back and forth the director can show how they are somehow linked. The two shots of parallel editing often happen simutaneously in different locations in which later on, the relevant characters confront each other in a new location. For example in this extract of Inception: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmptU7vEkNU

Continuity editing is used to smooth over the inherent discontinuity of the editingprocess and to establish a logical coherence between shots. It is extremely important for horror movies to have smooth cuts since the directors are trying to scare the audience and if it is not edited well enough the viewers won’t be captivated and the tension and suspense in the film will be gone.
